Summer has arrived and happily the weather is agreeing with the date!

Bonnie – Locked down but not locked in!
I know for many today is a day of raised anxiety. Some of you will have a decision to make about sending your kids back to school or keeping them at home, teachers will have the added worry of caring for and teaching those children who have returned, enforcing social distancing, ensuring hand hygiene, managing the excitement at seeing friends and reassuring those who are fearful, have separation anxiety and so on! These are all challenges facing teachers and parents, good luck!
Those shielded now have the chance to go out and meet up with one other person. I’m sure your anxiety levels are also raised after 12 weeks of lockdown, please go with what you are comfortable with and reach out if you need anything.
Here in England those of us who are not shielded can meet outdoors in groups of 6. I have just received an update 1/6/2020 that I can train up to 5 others (6 including me) outside in the park or garden.
I am able to personal train (allowed as of last Thursday) outdoors in my back garden, one client at a time and it’s been going very well. It’s been quite emotional seeing clients live in the flesh, all be it many metres distance, after three months of training via Zoom. I will happily train two people together (socially distanced) from different households or 4 people from the same household in my garden to ensure to space and sanitisation of equipment.
I have set up an outdoor exercise space, with shade and easily sanitised equipment, and have implemented a clear arrival, departure and santisation protocol.
It is of course a client’s choice to either continue to Zoom train or come to our outdoor gym – either way I’m happy to be there for them and deliver a great service.
It will be quite some time before indoor group exercise will be permitted, there are some rumours about July and even then it is likely to be restricted – a challenge to achieve and potentially not financially viable. Rest assured that I will not move forward with face to face group exercise until I feel that it’s safe to do so.
I’m thrilled to be able to continue with our very successful Zoom classes and thank you for the fabulous feedback. It seems that many of you are loving the classes and the convenience of walking in to your sitting room/kitchen/garden/bedroom, switching on the TV/ computer/tablets/smart phone/ and ‘boom’ you are at Class in minutes, no matter where you are in the country or the world!
Many of you are enjoying the opportunity to join more classes and try new things. Lots of you have told me that you love the music and variety on offer – thank you for your feedback me as I’m working hard to come up with new content to help keep you inspired and motivated. To know it’s noticed and valued is really rewarding.
I was doing a count back and can you believe that in 2020 I have taught online for more weeks than I have taught face to face? We enter our 12th week of online classes this week – I had been teaching face to face for 9 weeks before lockdown!
The time has whizzed by and I am so happy that as a community we have pulled together supporting each other during this pandemic. Our DYBO family have joined me and Steve teaching each other about the nuances of Zoom, recipes, heads up about where to go to get things, the best times and places to venture out and so on.
I love seeing the visitation of pets, kids and partners and those extra household members who are joining in, the interesting lockdown hairdo’s (Tanya and I seem to have a bandana competition going on, and she is winning, ha ha) and the home studios evolving over the weeks!
If you haven’t joined us yet and want support to jump in to the classes or you would like some one to one training, reach out we want to help you to join our essential health and wellbeing party and we miss you!
Welcome to all new/returned members from across the world – it’s fab to share our classes and one to one sessions with you. To our DYBO family in the USA, stay safe!

How to prepare your environment
- You need space to move 2 side steps, 4 walks forward, 4 backward. Move trip hazards and furniture as much as you can (get help, be careful!) to give you maximum space for upper and lower body movement. Roll up rugs or secure them so they don’t slip or cause you to trip.
- Plugging your device in to your TV with an HDMI cable is brilliant as it gives you a good picture of you (like a mirror) and me – as well as boosting the sound if you go through the TV/Hi-Fi sound system. If you can place your device under the TV, then even better.
- I know some of you are using your phones – try to plug in to a speaker system (even those little speakers we have when we go on holiday would help) so that you can hear better as you move back from the phone. Angie has tried Bluetooth earphones and it worked well.
- Ensure you have maximum access to your Wi-Fi in the house and as close to the router as is feasible. Take phones off the Wi-Fi system and pop them on to your 4/5G network or place on airplane mode, unless that’s what you are using to join us, obviously. Ask family to do the same for the duration of your class – keep them off the internet whilst you need the bandwidth. The more bandwidth you have, the better the picture and sound and the less likely you are to lose the feed. Your health is a priority at this time and I’m sure they can do something else for that short time!
- Ventilate your exercise space, have plenty of water and towels to hand, keep your exercise equipment close – if you need anything, let me know.
- Wear correct footwear for your activity – putting an old pair of socks over the toes and ball of your trainers will help reduce friction when exercising on carpet (if they are a really old pair, cutting the toes open and then just having them over the ball of the foot is even better). It’s up to you if you want to dance or train in bare feet but be careful if you don’t usually do this as it takes time for the muscles and connective tissue of the feet and rest of the body to adapt to barefoot training.
- Make your own gym equipment. Save laundry liquid or milk bottles – you can fill them with water or wet sand/rice etc. to add weight and make a dumbell/kettlebell. I recommend you make a few in differing weights and you have written on them so you know what they weigh and seal the caps with tape to prevent leakage. Get a heavy duty shopping bag and put weighty items in it, check they can’t fall out and you have a kettlebell alternative. Make your own hurdles, put cushions, pillows, boxes, books on the floor to jump over. Use household items as floor markers for circuit activities. The stairs and outdoor steps are great temporary steps/benches for cardio and upper body work. The garden is a great open space to make an assault course or if you can get a signal, take your class or PT session outside, but do make it safe.
