It’s set to get ‘scorchio’ this week so I’m getting our hot weather protocols in place. There will be fans, ice trays and air con units in place in our classes and the gym to keep us as comfortable as possible as the temperature goes up.
I have a fabulous air conditioning system already installed in my new gym and studio and oh my gosh, it’s effective.
You can do your bit too. Take a cool shower before class and wash lotions and creams off your skin (they can inhibit the natural cooling system provided by the skin). Wear either natural fibres such as cotton, bamboo or tech fabric designed to wick sweat away. Spray cool water on clothing which assists heat loss. Cool sprays on face are lovely too but can be pricey, wet a flannel and place it in the freezer and before class pop it in a bag and use to cool your face, neck and pulse points (inner elbow, wrists and back of knees). Keep hydrated throughout the day, cool but not iced water will assist with hydration, in fact the ideal is body temperature water although it’s less palatable (water will be held in the stomach until it’s reached body temperature then it’s released in to the blood stream – we are not hydrated until water is in the blood).
If you struggle sleeping, a little pre-bed preparation can help.
*Keep curtains drawn and windows shut during the day and open again at sun down, if it’s cooler.
*Pre-cool the bedroom with fans running over ice.
*Place sheets and pillowcases in the freezer then make the bed with the cold linen.
*Fill bottles with water and freeze, place in the bed wrapped in a sock or tea towel to avoid ice burns.
*Take a cool shower before bed.
*Sleep in your birthday suit, research has shown that we get a better night sleep when we are in the buff!
*Sleep solo, research has also shown that we sleep better when others do not disturb us in the heat by their tossing and turning or snoring!
Please do share your ‘keeping cool’ tips on our Facebook pages – either DYBO Health and Fitness or our closed group, DYBO participants.
Summer Schedule
Thank you for returning your class requests – the timetable looks pretty full so thank you for your commitment.
All classes (except Step) will run until the end of July.
My goal is to provide as many classes for you as I can but obviously we can only run those that cover costs.
Here are some ideas I’m working and hope I have your support.
*Mondays in August. Combine the two classes to create a fun multi level Summer Special class with some added Core conditioning. I will create a routine/s that provide different options to suit skills, preferences, experience and conditions. To be fair to both classes I propose the class time will be 7-8pm.
*Tuesdays HIIT, numbers are falling short some weeks, a small supplement across the Summer will ensure these classes can run throughout.
*Barre Fit numbers are falling short most weeks, a small supplement will ensure these classes can run throughout – there is a potential additional option to use my small Studio in Church Crookham but it’s not finished yet, so not a certainty.
* Thursdays Contemporary Stretch, numbers are ok for all except one week, the good weeks can cover the short fall on the quiet week.
*Dancespiration class number are just ok apart from two weeks, a small supplement would ensure the classes can run.
* Fridays Fitness Yoga, this class has the most variability in numbers, again a small supplement can help this class run, plus the Church Crookham studio option if it’s ready in time.
Church Crookham Studio. I am looking at potentially running some Barre Fit and Fitness Yoga from my new PT studio in Church Crookham (7-10 minute drive for All Hallows) on quiet nights but it’s not complete just yet so that’s up in the air, I will confirm venues closer to the relevant classes.
If you don’t agree with my suggestions and that affects your decision to attend on the dates you have requested or you have other suggestions please let me know asap as I’m finalising everything over the next few days. Please remember I’m doing the best I can for you all and I can’t afford to run at a loss.
Poor Jane!
Last week DYBO member Jane Bass, was run over by a van and consequently her thigh bone and elbow were broken, following successful surgery Jane is now home and being cared for by her family. She is promised a full recovery.
Jane asked me to thank you all for your kind thoughts, card and flowers, she is ‘champing at the bit’ to get back to her classes and see you all.
Summer Holiday One to One
As some of my regulars take a holiday over the next few weeks, I have some One to One appointments for PT, Gut Health and Diet consultations, NLP, Lifecoaching and Sports Therapy – book early to get appointments whilst they are available.
Cooling Watermelon Drink

- 8 oz cold watermelon, cut into 1″ pieces
- Juice of half of lemon
- Sweetener to taste, if necessary (I find watermelon sweet enough)
- Ice Cubes
- Sparkling water or soda water
- Sprig of mint to dress
Instructions
Option one: Place watermelon, lemon juice, and sweetener to a blender and blend until smooth.
Divide the watermelon mixture evenly into two 16oz glasses and fill the rest of the glass with a couple of ice cubes (optional) and sparkling/soda water.
Option two (my preference): Blend the watermelon, lemon juice, sweetener, and ice cubes to create a slushie. Divide evenly among the glasses and top with sparkling/soda water.
Please do let me know your thoughts about the class schedule and any keep cool tips you have.
Love ya,
Helen x
