I can’t ever remember a year like it, can you? So many celebrities and famous/iconic people have passed on and it’s only April. Last week’s passing of Victoria Wood, Percy Sledge and then Prince tipped me into a less positive mind set, finally the death of my oldest school friends’ Dad upset me greatly. It seems that the theory I shared with you in last week’s missive, regarding focusing on things that make us smile rather than those to moan about was really challenged!

I decided to go for a really long walk with the dogs to make sense of it all. As I wrote last week optimal mental health isn’t about being deliriously happy all the time, it’s unrealistic not to be upset by events such as loss, poor health and life struggles and so on. I believe that by focusing on all the good and wonderful things we have in our lives (these things are often the simplest things, a great night sleep, a good laugh with pals, sun on your face, hearing the birds in the morning, dogs playing in the garden etc.), it’s like we build up our positivity balance in our happy account, I know a few folks who really do moan about everything and can’t seem to see that they are surrounded by opportunities to be happy. They are constantly ‘withdrawing’ from their positivity bank account without making a deposit. Eventually when they really do need to make a withdrawal there is nothing left, then ‘boom’ ill health and/or depression! Remember happiness produces health improving hormones, serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin. Negativity and stress produces heath-damaging hormones (when they are produced in excess, and for extended periods) Adrenaline, Cortisol and Norepinephrine.

It’s reasonable to be upset and sad sometimes but if you find yourself angry, paranoid, sad and so on regularly and for long periods is wise to investigate getting some support to change your state. Ultimately we shouldn’t ignore those things that create within in us a state that we don’t want to live in. Take action; seek support do what ever it takes to invest in your happiness account.

Continuing with the purple food theme (Prince would love it) here is a tasty smoothie recipe. If you are using fresh berries, throw in a cup of ice cubes

Blueberry smoothie

1 ripe banana

1 cup frozen blueberries

1 cup unsweetened yogurt, Greek is nice and creamy

(I use non dairy Coconut yogurt)

Whizz in a blender or NutriBullet!

Have a fab week,

Love ya
