The thing about Tech stuff is (for me) that unless we work in that area of technology we are all playing ‘catch up’. I feel overwhelmed by constantly needing to look up, research and learn about how to operate things in my own house (you know, satellite, TV, washing machine even), to connect with you guys on the internet, promote my work with potential clients on social media and so on. As I’m not a large business with marketing departments, account departments, legal departments and so on it does make for a long day when I am working with my clients and classes and working on the content for the majority of my time. ‘Boo Hoo’ I hear you cry (ha ha) quite rightly, I know ‘suck it up’, Helen’!

You know I’m not a big fan of computer related things, and I’m aware that many folks love stuff like that, I prefer to work face to face, get out of the house and meet real people, support local shops and workers, see live shows and so on. I recently did a few online shops for my weekly groceries but it was far from ‘hassle-free’ so I shall return to squeezing my own ‘Melons, Man’!

By contrast our Steve is very ‘tech savvy’ and in his role as an Elite Performance Director, much of his coaching is done remotely. His athletes record their detailed training data and upload it to him – he can also follow their efforts live no matter where they are in the world through satellite signals. His feedback is both ‘online’ and over the phone but he still feels the need to meet up with them in person, look them in the eye and truly listen. We all (although some are better at it than others) pick up a great deal of information when talking to another person that goes beyond words, looking in someone’s eyes as they talk is really important, for many reasons that go beyond data collection.

This weekend he was riding his bike on his indoor turbo trainer plugged into various virtual riding packages as he is reviewing them for a Pro Cycle magazine. He often trains this way anyway and as the weather was horrid, it’s useful for keeping up your training whilst staying safe and dry – however for the full (beyond data) fitness and holistic life experience you can’t beat being out in the fresh air, taking in the world, nature, elements and life outside of your own four walls.

Many health clubs are running virtual classes, and some have resistance machines where you pop in your card and it talks you through your workout speaking to you in a virtual PT American ‘robo’ voice.

I can see the both the benefits and many pitfalls with this type of training, as with everything it’s ok when we use ‘tech’ to assist us with our lives rather than it ‘becoming’ our lives.

So when you choose to work with me and the DYBO team you will have a very human experience where we make jokes, have a laugh, adapt to make your session harder, easier and varied based on how we see you are on that day. No class/session is ever the same (despite them being prepared in advance) because the variable in the system is the humans. Now a machine can pick up on heart rate, blood pressure, power, speed, where you are at the time, oxygen usage and so on (we can use machines to tell you all this and interpret the information) but not on how your day/week has been, how stressed you are whether you’ve had some great/awful news etc. It can’t put a virtual arm around you or make you smile, tell you honestly that you can give a little more expression in your dance or effort in your core class, or to back off when you are over stretching etc., those things are left to us humans to share.

Recipe

It’s said that when America sneezes we get a cold. I don’t really appreciate all that we inherit for America and reject much of it, but if there’s an excuse to have a party and treat ourselves then I’m up for it. Its Thanksgiving this Thursday and whilst they celebrate their Independence we too can celebrate them being independent from us too! (especially in light of recent events!)

So here is a yummy low carb and grain free Apple pie recipe…

Ingredients

Filling

Pecan Pie Crust

Instructions

1  Place pecans in food processor and pulse until the texture of coarse gravel

2  Pulse in egg, coconut flour and salt until mixture forms a ball
