I love wearing flip flops or going barefoot and so this extra little bit of sunshine and mild weather has been a welcome blessing. I rarely wear shoes even when training in the gym because I believe that training shoes dull the information that our central nervous system receives from our feet for assistance with balance and co-ordination. Our feet are perfectly designed to assist us absorb and recycle impact and turn it into propulsion for walking, running or jumping. The thick soles of gym shoes dull the feedback our feet get from contact with the floor and create a buffer in the information our proprioceptive systems require to effectively help us balance, move and halt. Shoes are helpful when feet are weakened or vulnerable to friction and rough surfaces, if doing high impact and repetitive impact activities, trainers designed for the job are a good idea as most of us don’t have sufficient foot conditioning to do the job unaided, it is possible to build foot condition through specific flexibility, strengthening and endurance building activities. In Chinese medicine it is said that we grow old from the feet upwards and this is true; weak and inflexible feet will impact upon the joints above. Just one example is bunions and valgus toe which changes how we use our feet, creating a twist in the knee joint that then causes the lower back to arch and so on up the body. So look after your feet by keeping them flexible and strong, wearing the right shoe for the job, ensure your shoes and trainers fit properly and are aired and sanitized regularly, look after your foot hygiene and keep your toenails trimmed.
For more news about my inspirational weekend, members news, special classes, our DYBO Christmas Dinner, and a seasonal recipe read on….
This weekend I had the pleasure of joining the Freestyle Fitness Yoga Revolution Inspiration Day. I grasped this opportunity to participate in a class with Jayne Nicholls, the creator of the FFY programme, listen to how she has evolved her teaching and join another session with my esteemed friend and colleague Monica Linford who led a complimentary and contrasting Yoga influenced session. It was a real treat to be the student and to focus on what I needed for myself. I really think that you would benefit from Monica’s expertise in restorative movement and so I have invited her (and she has agreed) to take a short course for DYBO members (more information to follow shortly).
Congratulations
to DYBO member Julie McDowell who got engaged to her American Boy, Matt Taylor last weekend. Matt (the great big romantic) proposed in Paris!!! Ooo la la.
We are thrilled for you both. x

DYBO Christmas nosh up!
I want to celebrate Christmas with all my DYBO family (class members, 1 to 1 clients and team) and so have booked Zizzi’s restaurant in Farnham for Friday 18th December, 8pm.
The £24.95 Christmas set menu looks lovely, has various choices including Veggie options and a healthy Salad for those who would prefer; it also includes a glass of Prosecco. There is a 10% service charge per person but it still looks good value.
I will bring the menus to class as their Christmas menu isn’t on their website yet.
Let me know if you would like to come, no need to give me a deposit yet, I just need numbers at present.
From Broadway to Hollywood
Is the theme of this years Christmas Party class, so come dressed as your favourite stars of stage or silver screen.
Save the date, Tuesday 15th December, 7.30pm (glass of bubbles afterwards)

Seasonal Recipe – Baked Figs.
DYBO member, Val Harris, was telling me she had so many Figs she didn’t know what to do with them. Figs are so rich in nutrients it seems a waste to leave them all to the birds so why not try this healthy and tasty seasonal recipe cold for breakfast or hot as a desert!
Ingredients
8 large fresh figs
2 tbsp approx runny honey
Splash or two Marsala wine (Port or Madeira just as good)
Mascarpone, Greek yogurt (I use vanilla Coconut yoghurt) or ice cream
Preparation method
Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.
Cut a deep cross down into each fig, nearly to the bottom, then squeeze the sides of each fig to expose the juicy flesh. Place the figs into a lidded baking dish.
Drizzle over the honey and wine, ensuring some runs down inside the figs. Cover with the lid and bake in the oven for about 20 minutes.
Serve the figs immediately with /mascarpone/yoghurt/ice cream and the boozy syrup from the baking dish.
Have a fantastic week and remember to book in for the Masterclass, Christmas Party class and the DYBO Christmas nosh up!
Love ya,
Helen x
