Well we are all a bit blurry eyed here at camp UKFA (soon to be DYBO) – we’ve had a busy weekend!

It’s been a fantastic weekend of sport in our capital with the Invictus Games and the final day of the Tour of Britain bike race. We were in London all day with Steve who was catching up with his riders (coaching) and of course, cheering them on. It is a fantastic event with the streets of Westminster closed to traffic and London Bridge, with the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben as a back drop, filled with team vehicles. It’s a great opportunity to see the world’s best Cycle teams and riders. This year’s race was extremely tough but 4 of Steve’s 5 riders endured and completed the Tour.

Invictus = Inspirational
Who could have failed to be inspired and moved by the amazing mental and physical strength of the Invictus competitors, I’m humbled by their tenacity and determination to go on after being injured, so terribly, defending our (and others) country and then go on to represent it with equalled passion. A stand out quote for me was by GB Team Captain, Captain David Henson – when speaking about the technology in the new prosthetic limbs – he said ‘my prosthetic limbs are awesome, but not as awesome as real legs! I get frustrated when I see people not using their legs!’ wow, I bet he does.

I hear every excuse under the sun as to why people don’t move, get up and get on. These people have to overcome unimaginable adversity. Every day they wake up, and before they can get up, they strap on their prosthetics. A physio’ described how much fitter than the average person they have to be in their remaining muscles in order to move, incredible. So what excuse do we have that compares? Ours usually boils down to how we choose to prioritise what we do/don’t do daily!

Scary!
A client recently had orthopaedic surgery and shared the ward with (mainly) amputees. These amputations were due to complications from diabetes (Type 2 is entirely preventable) and smoking! I don’t think that any of those people imagined that the outcome of their chosen life style was amputation!

Get involved!
As most of you know Mini and I are raising money by walking for Guide Dogs for the Blind (thank you for your donations). I’m calling up on you to help us.!
I’m organising a walk on Sunday 28th September locally (I’m thinking the Caesars camp area. Bourley Road end. I just have to find out if we need permission and from whom – any one know?) Starting at 10am.

After the horrendous tragedy at the Dogs home in Manchester, I would like to split the fund raising between Guide Dogs for the Blind and the Dogs home.
You can either get sponsored or make a donation to join us. I will send more details soon.
If you have a dog, you need to take it out for a walk anyway and if you don’t, you would benefit from the walk. It’s Just an hour, you can take it easy or do the hills it’s up to you!
I think we should all get together following the walk and have a cup of tea and a bit of cake too! I would love some help with this if any one has any ideas/experience.
No need to have a dog I’m sure we can share lead duties!!! Call me or email or tell me at class/training if you want to join us in helping others.

Big One South, wanna come?
I’m presenting two sessions at this Saturday’s Big One South event held in Reading.
The organisers have said that you can attend for only £20 if you use my name when you book – fab, eh! There are lots of great classes to enjoy and it keeps you out of trouble for the day too!

Thank FFY it’s Friday
I’m loving my Friday night class ‘Freestyle Fitness Yoga’ and so are the class members. We have 2 more left on Friday but I am thinking about making it a permanent class on the timetable on another night, let me know if you are interested. The next course, starting in October, is “Big Balls and What To Do With Them” (3rd,10th,17th, 24th, 31st)

DYBO- The Choreography Equation
I’m delivering my first workshop under the DYBO banner on Sunday the 19th October, at All Hallows School in Farnham. It’s a full day of choreography and teaching methods, techniques and of course routines. I’m passionate about assisting teachers become excellent at creating and teaching fab classes, keeping creativity and individuality alive in this pre-packaged dominant fitness industry. This is one of several training days I plan to offer, but I will not be doing many so it’s a unique and to some extent, exclusive, opportunity. Many people call themselves experts with dubious credentials, I have earned the right to be described as an expert with my background in professional dance, choreography, college lecturing and of course applying the theory to practice with over 30 years of teaching and actually walking the walk (or should I say dancing the dance!).

Anything else?

I think that’s everything to tell you?

Remember I want to hear from you, I want to know what you want, like, would like to try, don’t understand or want to share it’s what we are all about here at UKFA, CF&DC and DYBO!

Have a fab week

Love ya

Helen
