All of our actions are based on the decisions we make. We might not like the outcome or consequences but somewhere along the chain of events and thoughts associated, we took a choice. What has prompted this opening to my weekly missive? Well initially it was the ‘hoo ha’ around the World Athletics Championships, the poor GB medal tally, the outcome of the Men’s 100m and the triumph of Mo Farrah and how we either own or not, the choices we make.

In the lead up to the Champs (and for many years before) the decisions, choices and actions made by the World Athletics authorities, the governing bodies, teams of coaches and the athletes themselves led to the results on the day. When and how to train, rest, sleep, psychological preparation, how much additional non-athletic work they do (media promotion etc.) supplementation, partying and more, all contribute to the outcome. How much luck is involved is not a measurable or possibly even relevant point. Do you remember the Director of Team GB Cycling (now head of Sky racing), David Brailsford lays much of their success to his principle of ‘marginal gains’ – doing all of the necessary actions all of the time required to achieve success.

Last night I watched a documentary about the last few years of Patrick Swayze’s life. He died from pancreatic cancer (the type that is caused by lifestyle choices and is almost always terminal). He looked from the outside, lean fit and healthy, he had the world at his dancing feet, was in a loving marriage and was a huge star yet he was a heavy smoker and alcoholic. He chose alcohol as his solace when his Dad passed away, the consequences of which combined with his 60 a day smoking habit (continuing even after being given his diagnosis and entering a medical trial to fight his disease) resulted in his suffering an early death (at just 57). So sad and even more so for him and those who loved him because it was preventable.

Every day I hear people say that they had to eat or drink this, that or the other, skip their exercise, go to bed late, smoke, not practice mindfulness or meditation, be late/early for appointments, work too hard, too little etc. because of an excuse that they blame something, someone else for. Ulitmately every choice we make has a consequence, be honest with yourself because you will be the one who lives with those consequences in terms of health, figure, fitness, finances, relationships and more! Remember that before you act or don’t act !
