I’m sure many of us could do with an injection of positivity after the trials of an election (although for me, voting is far from a chore, it’s a freedom that I will always embrace), terror attacks and being surrounded by general ‘moaniness’ in the media.
On Sunday DYBO Divas Karen Smith, Jo Hobbs, Caroline Anderson, Hayley Simes and (‘mini’ Diva, Ella), Sue North with honoury DYBO dudes Steve and Simon, ably assisted (dragged) by Mini, Miki, Lili and Barney completed the Phylis Tuckwell Charity walk…

Glorious sunshine, beautiful country side, great company and seeing lots of birds and animals was our reward for getting up on a Sunday to do good for others. Helping others is an effective way of boosting mood and reducing mild to moderate depression, and do-gooders are often the happiest people around. However if we do good deeds to gain attention or kind feedback, rather than simply the positive feelings that helping others out gives us, then it is less effective as an anti-depressant, particulary if the attention desired isn’t forthcoming. Being happy with our own efforts is our reward.
If you need to lift your spirits, other mood lifters are:
Listening to upbeat music (with positive lyrics)
Dancing, walking and exercise generally
Hanging out with upbeat positive people, stay away from those emotional vampires
Good sleep quality and duration (7-9 hours)
Nourishing food that gives the body all it needs without causing digestive health or energy issues
Getting out in nature and spending time in daylight
Having goals and moving towards them
Being organised and mainitain a work/life balance that prevents overwhelm or indeed boredom and being underchallenged
Meditate and take time away from work/chores at least once a day for at least 10 minutes
Avoid stimulants such as smoking, alcohol or caffeine, over use or relying on them will create the opposite effect.
Move regularly – get up from your desk every hour and have an activity snack for 1 minute eg, run on the spot, do ‘spotty dogs’, dance about, practice a dance move from class, walk the stairs, squats, lunges, desk push ups, planks or mountain climbers. Get everyone involved.
Doing so will boost mood, metabolic hormones, loosen joints and muscles, energise, increase allertness and mental function – all of which improve productivity and general wellness… it’s so simple yet really effective.
Decide to be positive and avoid dwelling on the negative and uncontrollable.
To keep you inspired and motivated, we have new routines for Cardio Dance, Cardio Fit and Dancespiration this week and (as always) new/varied content for all our other classes. Keeping it fresh!

Thanks for the Feedback
I have been given some wonderful feedback regarding all of our classes and indeed about our class members too, who have as always welcomed newcomers with warmth, friendliness and supportiveness. We are getting great results and feedback from our new classes, Barre Fit (Wednesdays 7.30pm) and Freestyle Fitness Yoga (Fridays 6.30pm) with comments on improved posture, muscle tone, strength and flexibility being high up on the list of noted benefits.
Keep the kind words coming and please do share them with others too, you are not only our beloved dybo family but also our best adverts and marketeers. Without you spreading the word we would be pushed aside by the large franchises and chains.
Funkraiser postponed
This event has been postponed by the organisers – I will keep you posted.

Low Carb Celeriac Chips
If you, like me keep, to a low sugar and starchy carbohydrate diet then try these alternatives to potatoe chips. Celeriac is low in starch but high in dietary fibre.
If you are not a fan of the flavour, try coating them in a mixed spice or mild curry powder before baking in the oven.
| 1 | large | celeriac root(s) |
| 1 | tablespoon | Olive or coconut oil |
| 1 | teaspoon | Rock salt |
| 1 | teaspoon | black pepper, freshly ground |
- Preheat oven to 450 F
- Cut the celeriac into 1/4 inch strips (like french fries) and place them in an oven-proof dish.
- Drizzle with olive oil and season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper if desired.
- Bake the fries for approximately 10 minutes.
- After 10 minutes, decrease the temperature to 400 F for another 8-10 minutes.
You can experiment with chunkier chips that you parboil before hand.
Let me know what you think.
Have a fab weeek
Love ya,
Helen x
