Have you been enjoying the Olympics?
I’m always inspired by what humans can achieve with the magic combination of talent, clever and dedicated training, support and human spirit. To see Olympians push so hard for many years before the games and during their events – sometimes hearing about the challenges they have overcome to get there, is interesting and truly humbling.
The team of refugees competing under the Olympic Flag is brilliant and represents the original spirit of the Olympics. Hearing what they have been through and how difficult it’s been for them to even be able to train for their event let alone be good enough to compete is incredible. I’m certain that sport (dance) and exercise provides people going through challenging times with a welcome distraction, something else to focus on, something they can take control of or provide them with some form of normality. Exercise produces hormones that create a sense of wellbeing and boosts mood. Post-exercise, the body produces hormones that bring about a reduction in stress hormones and enables relaxation and better sleep.
I have my favourite events of course and have had some ‘heart in mouth’ moments too, like the poor French gymnast who broke both the bones in his lower leg and the terrible crashes in the Road Cycling (I really did think that the Dutch race leader in the women’s road race had died when she crashed). These folks really do risk it all. I know how many of the athletes live on the bread line, all for reaching for their dream of Olympic glory (or even just getting there) and wearing that GB tracksuit. The majority live at home and are funded by their families. I’m honored to have pulled on a GB tracksuit and represented my country for four years – precious memories and for me a priceless experience.
I had the opportunity to give our two Synchro Olympians, a sports therapy session each just before they left for Rio, it’s Olivia’s third Olympics and Katie’s second so they are very experienced performers at this highly pressurised level.
They are in great shape and totally ready to represent GB at their best.
Here’s a video of them in action
Olivia Federici and Katie Clark
Watch them perform in Rio on the14th-16th August.

Something for the BBQ
I’ve been a Veggie for a year now and can honestly say, apart from proper gravy, I’ve not found it difficult to eat healthily and be a veggie.
Here’s a meal or side vegetable idea for you to try.
Sweet Potato skewers
Enjoy either as a side dish or add chicken, feta or hallumi for some protein. Serve with a big green Salad, yummy
You will need
4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks keep size uniform to ensure even cooking
Olive oil
Salt and pepper to season
Bamboo skewers (moistened)
Cook sweet potato cubes until soft enough to slide on to the skewers (3mins rest and then another 3mins in Microwave or par boil for approx. 5 mins)
Thread 5-6 cubes on the skewer and drizzle with oil.
Place skewers on a pre heated grill for approx. 20 minutes turning every 5 minutes.
I hope you enjoy, tell me what you think!
Have an amazing week.
Love ya,
Helen xxx
