This week we have a bonus day, an extra 24 hours that we can make the most of! Did you know that the leap year system was started by Julius Caesar over 2000 years ago and that traditionally young ladies can propose to their beloved on February the 29th (as long as she rises at dawn, washes her face in the morning dew and wears red knickers when she proposes!). Being born on a leap day is a great way to cheat father time, but a birthday celebration every 4 years isn’t so great is it!
Whilst I was out walking Mini on Sunday, I was thinking about how thankful I am that I have quickly rid myself of the cold I picked up last week and was reviewing the various actions I had taken to support my immune system. I can’t give any one-thing credit, in fact it’s possible that the combination of all the little things I did was the difference that made the difference. It reminded me of how overwhelmed we can feel when jobs at work, and home, start piling up and rather than this prompting us to take action, the sheer volume of tasks can stop us from even starting. When working with clients on their goals, I often remind them that even small steps, taken consistently, are how they can successfully move towards their objective, and that by not taking any action they are voting for status quo, or even a slip backwards.
Breaking a task or goal down into small achievable chunks and giving each action a plan/time/schedule, which must be stuck to, is an effective strategy for success.
For example, imagine that you want to de-clutter your spare room but don’t have a lot of free time, you might think “forget it, I’ll have to ignore the mess” whilst continuing to feel overwhelmed by the job and disliking the chaos in the room. What if you gave the job just half an hour every day until it was done? Why not start by clearing one drawer at a time and sticking to the 30 minutes you allowed yourself to work on the ‘de-clutter the spare room project’. Don’t do any more , even if you ‘are in the zone’! Going ‘over time’ can create a demotivation strategy because you went against the unconscious contract you made with yourself to stick to half an hour. So the following day, instead of continuing with the next drawer, your unconscious might say “ You promised thirty minutes yesterday and you did more, which meant you didn’t do X.’ or ‘have time for Y’ or ‘now you are over tired!’etc.
The same applies to doing a fitness training session; stick to the allocated time no matter ‘how in the zone’ you are!
We can use the same ‘Step by Step’ principles to building our fitness, boosting our health and improving our diet. Make a decision about what you want, what you are going to do to achieve it and by when. Write everything down, put it in your diary and make a commitment to yourself and others ie. plan to meet others at classes, gym etc. and pay in advance (research shows that when people pay in advance and commit to meet up with others at classes/gym/run etc. they are likely to keep up their regime and consequently achieve their goals).
Change just one thing at a time, and then layer other changes, as each one becomes the norm/habit. Great things can be achieved by taking apparently small actions consistently.
Boogie Fit, Mondays at 6.30pm
Is a class for beginners and returners or any one who wants to avoid too much impact or complexity but wants to dance their way to fitness.
I am thoroughly loving teaching Boogie Fit, it’s a joy to see those who thought that they couldn’t do a dance inspired fitness class, really get their groove on and ‘dance their butts off ‘ – it’s fab! If you’ve been a bit nervous about joining the funky fun (please don’t be) tonight’s a great night to start as we have a new routine.
Remember the ‘Middle Bit’ is free to those attending either ‘Boogie Fit’ or ‘Cardio Dance’ on the same night.
