Well it’s here, I told you that summer’s on its way!!!!
I have some tips later to help you stay cool at night so you can get some sleep and during your exercise and dance sessions.
Firstly since our last catch up there was the horrendous fire at the Grenfell Tower block in London. You might know that within a couple of hours of news breaking I had started collecting donations of clothes, toys, bedding, towels and toiletries for those made homeless by the fire. Of course so had the community local to the fire. By the time I was ready to deliver these items that evening they were already overwhelmed with donations. Without organisational experts or enough people to sort and distribute everything they are overwhelmed and have asked for everyone to hold fire on bringing more donations. I have continued to collect and sort donations from our end (thank you Abbi who helped me organise, collate and catalogue donations on Saturday) and they are stored at Blue Box Storage In Farnborough, who has donated a storage unit to keep everything safe.
Like everyone I’m horrified by what has happened and will continue to try and help, as yet it’s still a massive mess, with homeless fire victims, no idea who is being treated, who has survived, who belongs to who and how many have perished. When I get the go ahead I shall deliver the donations to wherever they are needed.
We must carry on living the best way we can, we help no one by being any thing less! Be kind, be considerate, be respectful, be helpful, look after each other and ourselves and carry on.
This week will be ‘hot hot hot’ and in anticipation I have purchased four more large powerful floor fans which I will place iced water in front of to create an air cooling system to keep you more comfortable during our classes. The PT gym is already set up, ready for the sun.
Cool as a Cucumber, Helen’s tips to keep cool…
>Wear natural fibres or specialist sweat wicking fabrics
>Avoid going out in the sun between 11 and 4pm
>Do not (ideally) sunbathe before exercising
>Wear long sleeves, hat and sun protection cream during the day
>Rinse creams off the skin before exercising to allow for natural sweat process
>Place a damp face cloth in a bag in the fridge, add some ice cubes and take with you when you go out/exercise. Place cold damp cloth on pulse points a regular intervals i.e. wrists, neck face, elbows back of knees where veins are class to the surface of the skin and blood flow can be cooled
>Drink room temperature water not iced water; cold water will sit in your stomach until body temperature (to prevent shock), delaying rehydration.
>Sip water regularly, by the time you notice thirst you will already have been dehydrated for quite some time. You need around 2 litres daily and more when sweating.
>Keep an eye on your pee, which should be odourless and pale straw coloured
> It’s good to sweat, if you stop sweating , go very red or very pale you might be hyperthemic and have heat stroke. Other symptoms include muscle cramps, extreme fatigue, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion and its serious requiring immediate medical attention.
>Spray cool water on your skin and clothes to help cool you
To keep your home as cool as ‘The Fonz’
>Keep windows closed and curtains drawn all day and keep the sun out
>Place sheets and pillowcases in the freezer and put on the bed when ready to retire
>Freeze half filled water bottles and place them in bed (the reverse of a hot water bottle), obviously don’t let the ice directly on to your skin, place a towel around them to protect your skin
>At night point fans towards the window (the motor on the fan will heat up raising room temperature so always have the window open). Place a tray of water and ice in front of the fan so it blows cool air across you.
>Get the room as cool as you can before you go to bed
>Ditch the duvet
>Turn of all electrical items, even when on standby
>Take a cool shower before bed is a great idea and air dry in front of the fan. Thank goodness the curtains are already closed, we don’t want to give the neighbours an X rated show!!!
> A cool water spray during the night can help you cool off if you wake up
I welcome any tips if you have any!
Abbi has found a fabulous low sugar healthy iced lolly recipe that will cool you down and makes a great dessert too. Recipe at the end of this email.
Full Steam ahead, with an added bonus
All classes are running at usual times with an optional bonus 20 -30 minutes added to Barre Fit this week, to learn how to Pirouette with Daisy. If you want a refresher or you’ve never had a go, you are welcome to stay on for a little bit of Pirouette coaching! Remember it’s optional, you can stay and play or head straight home after class.

Steve’s boys..
A great result for ONE Pro Cycling yesterday in Northumberland with 1st and 3rd in the Beaumont Trophy, one of the UK’s most prestigious one day races. Over a hot and undulating 190km, Pete Williams crossed the line in first place with Tom Stewart taking 3rd ahead of the chasing pack.
