I hope you have had the weekend you wanted and needed for your mind, body and spirit.

I have enjoyed a very busy time and you know me, I always look for the extra lessons that are available for me to re-affirm, confirm, stimulate or simply enjoy.

On Saturday I went to see one of our ‘Independance’ guest presenters Dan Little and his students of street dance (Vanquish Productions). I was impressed by the passion of the students that is undoubtedly inspired by Dan himself and their committed performances which certainly took many hours or training and rehearsal. The success of the show is largely down to this commitment. The music, choreography and costumes were also excellent and it was a truly fabulous multi-sensory experience.

On Sunday we went to see our very own Ballerina Daisy West in action at Sadlers Wells, a very different style, exquisite movement and control which has taken years and years (despite only being just 21 years of age) to achieve. We are, of course, in awe of Daisy, her passion, her talent and her drive to seek and achieve perfection. She has risen to this standard because of her natural abilities, expert tuition and hard graft.

Our world is becoming increasingly virtual and its the same in the fitness industry. It’s not just the budget Gyms that offer virtual classes (i.e. a video/computer program of an instructor, rather than a live teacher) but also the expensive clubs too.

Without true masters of their craft and masterful teachers who effectively pass on their knowledge & experience offering individual guidance and coaching and teachers who connect with the student  (of any age) speaking to their inner talent and passion assisting them with confidence and drive to achieve excellence, none of us will have the Daisy’s, Dan’s or his students to entertain us or to be masterful ourselves. We won’t get the opportunity to be inspired to be our best or learn and be supported to take the actions necessary to be effective in any chosen field.

The live experience (be it on stage or in the exercise/ dance studio) is about all of our senses being involved, the sounds of the surrounding environment, the smells, the feeling of being with others, the interaction with fellow students and, when you have an excellent teacher and peers, the support, encouragement and informed advice that meets your unique needs and makes you better.

In an increasingly isolating world that has been created by the ‘convenience’ of working, being entertained and shopping from home, folks are missing out on part of what makes us human, social interaction, and the unconscious skills and sense of belonging that we experience when with others. Supermarkets have removed cashiers, we get an online diagnosis for illness, our children collect/ hand in their homework online or have online lectures. For many of us, chatting at the check-out to the cashier and fellow shoppers, talking to the schoolteacher and school pals etc.or meeting up at our fitness and dance classes gives us all much needed social interaction and a sense of support and belonging.

We are following like sheep being told that this is the most convenient, cheapest modern, ‘best’ way forward – well I wholeheartedly disagree and choose to see a person at the tills, my GP if I’m ill, go and see real live performances and be taught by an excellent teacher, a genuine expert not a self-appointed guru whose expertise is in self-marketing! Ultimately for the apparent convenience and ‘cheapness’ of the virtual world we are likely to all pay a far greater price in the long run.

There is a class timetable change this week so read on for news of that, information about a new Class plus ‘Independance day’ details and this weeks recipe.
