After some very sad news on Friday I was reminded that life is sometimes too short. A dear friend in Fitness (many of you know her too) passed away on Friday aged just 56. She had won a battle against cancer 10 years ago but this time it snuck up on her and took her from confirmed diagnosis to death in just 7 weeks. Lots of her clients and friends have written on her Facebook tribute page about her skills as an instructor, her energy, being inspirational and her pride and love for her children and grandchildren. Some even suggested that as a fit lady she shouldn’t have got cancer. Now I’m not going to discuss her history regarding lifestyle, stress levels, diet, excercise and so on (I don’t have the full picture and it’s not my place) but what I will say is that research has confirmed that a healthy lifestyle including optimal amounts of exercise (including a combination of cardiovascular, muscular conditioning and flexiblity work), a diet that is low in sugar, additives and preservatives, is as natural as possible, packed with nutrients, avoids drinking alcohol (or drinking rarely and small amounts – goverment guidelines of 14 units per week are a maximum not a target), drinking lots of water (8 pints daily), not smoking tobacco or taking drugs, managing stress and getting enough sleep are all essential to staying healthy and avoiding cancer (and most other diseases too). All of these things remain important when fighting cancer, during treatment and even in the paliative phase of the cancer journey. Sadly some folks have inherited genes that increase their risk of getting cancer and even if they do all the good stuff outlined above, they still have an increased risk. If they don’t do the good stuff, getting cancer is almost a certainty. My message is – and always has been – live each day as if it were your last but look after yourself as if you will live forever.
So to my dear fitness friend Jan Mazan of over 30 years, Rest in Peace and say hi to Prince, George Michael, Michael Jackson and David Bowie when you give them a kick arse Spin Class up in heaven. X
