Happy New year my DYBO darlings! I have given you some time off my weekly missive in order for us all to enjoy the full festive experience without me drawing your conscious back to all things health and fitness. In my view, balance is part of physical and mental fitness, easing back on constant self discipline occasionally is as important as having the ability to maintain it! That said I’m totally ready to get back to healthy eating and our fun and fabulous classes, I’ve missed you.

You know how I like to multi-task, well I managed to combine a cold with the Christmas break! I hear lots of you did the same, so if that’s you I hope you are feeling better and ready to get back to great health and fitness in 2019.

You know that I’m uber passionate about teaching everyone I can about the variety of great ways to care for your own (and loved ones) health and fitness and so for me, January is a maddening time! You must be thinking ‘why Helen isn’t that when most folks are looking for classes and training and looking for advice and support regarding weight loss?’

Let me share a rant I posted on Facebook after I could no longer keep my ‘gob shut’…

‘People… (she shouts, as she slaps her forehead and rolls her eyes after seeing yet another social media advert for a rubbishly delivered ETM class)…there is NO ‘NEW’, ‘LATEST’ workout! They are all rinse and repeat versions of what has gone before. They are simply repackaged, rebranded, often hybridised (made up word), diluted activities formerly known as Keep Fit, Aerobics, Exercise to Music, Hi Lo, Circuits, Body Conditioning, Callisthenics, Weights, Dance etc. There is nothing brand new out there.

My advice (and I have the qualifications, knowledge and experience to give it!) is find a great teacher (both qualified and adhering to the recognised standards of that qualification) of something you love because you are far more likely to go back every week knowing that you will be in safe hands, have fun and can achieve your goals because you will give it your all and adhere to that activity!
I REPEAT THERE IS NO NEW LATEST/MORE EFFECTIVE FITNESS/WEIGHT LOSS product out there – it’s the same bloody thing every year, just rebranded and sold to instructors as a franchise!
A great teacher will inspire, motivate, create, guide, support, encourage and inform… sharing knowledge and techniques……. look for one of those!’

The best form of exercise is the one that you will do (usually because you enjoy it) and continue to do!

I resent media and ‘fashionistas’ telling us what we should be doing in terms of our fitness choices, what we should wear or how we should look (e.g. strong is the new skinny, today, big bums and thighs with a 6 pack are in fashion. Remember the 50’s was about being curvy, The 60’s and 70’s was really skinny, the 80’s was leggy and lean and the 90’s was fit and amazonian. Today it’s thick muscular thighs, big bums and small waists with visible abs.

Come on, how can we change our natural body shape from one year to the next?

I’m sticking two fingers up to fashion and a big high five to natural and genuine personal health and fitness.

The big health club and diet chains and franchises are all pushing their products on TV and media, offering the one size fits all diet and fitness products (pre-set by one central source with the same music, content and delivery across the world/chain! Often via virtual classes too i.e. no live teacher (just a video!) and charging significant money for it!

My firm belief is that we are all different and unique and so require different content and delivery. Our classes reflect this with original choreography and class content that is instructed throughout i.e. demonstrations and verbal instruction, with performance tips, coaching, alternatives and adaptations when required. This is truly unique in today’s fitness world! Many classes are delivered without the instructor even speaking let alone giving advice and guidance as how to maximise effectiveness or stay safe.

To be clear we welcome you to DYBO classes no matter what your shape or size, how fit you are or what you wear! (t-shirts and leggings, jogging bottoms or shorts from Primark or Lululemon we don’t care).

We will support you and help you gain the level and type of fitness you want and we do that free from judgement!

Tell everyone about DYBO and what we do! Let’s take on those big clubs, franchises and brands and show them that we choose how we take our fitness activities! People power can make a big difference and I’m looking for your support!

 

We are back!

All our classes are running Monday to Friday with a variety of types to cover all fitness needs (ie cardio vascular, muscular, flexibility, balance co ordination, core, relaxation and recovery and of course, FUN!)

Gut Cleanse!

Our Gut health dictates our general health (it’s linked with major and minor health concerns) additionally our Microbiome is key to our weight management.

I have a new Gut cleanse group commencing on Wednesday the 9thJanuary feel free to ask about it or Jump on board!

 

Christmas Bloat!

Our gut has had quite a busy time over the festive season!!!!

Maybe you are experiencing the after effects on your joints, digestion, energy levels, skin and waistline? How about trying this drink daily for the next week to help your gut recover?

Anti-Inflammatory Turmeric Milk

Ingredients

2 x cups plain coconut milk

2 x teaspoons turmeric powder

½ teaspoon cinnamon

Pinch of black pepper

1 teaspoon natural honey

¼ teaspoon ginger powder

Directions

Blend ingredients together in a blender.

Pour into saucepan and heat for 3 to 5 minutes over medium heat until warm.

Drink and enjoy!

I must have been having a massage with Helen, on a monthly basis for over 10 years now.  I really value this time.  Helen will advise me if there is a small problem with my back or legs, and give me the right exercises to do , to correct the problem.  Helen has helped me before and after 2 uni-compartmental knee replacement operations.  I am 73 years old and thankfully feel fit.  I swim twice a week, enjoy pilates and a hydrofit class.  Helen  has been a major help in keeping me flexible, fit and healthy, and I recommend her most highly.
