Birthday Week!

6:30 pm - 7:15 pm
December 11, 2018

As I checked the date for this week’s communication with you, my DYBO darlings, I was reminded that my birthday is imminent (yes 35 + VAT and P&P again). In all seriousness it’s thought provoking to say the least. Today (like most days) I feel really healthy and happy and nothing like some folks would have you believe I should feel at this age with this number of miles on the clock.

I’m surrounded by dynamic, fit and fabulous women (and of course men but forgive me as I speak from my female position) who are funny, successful, intelligent, giving etc. and motivated to make a positive difference to our world and everything on it! Women of all ages, many of whom are over forty, fifty, sixty and seventy and are nothing like the adverts or media would have us believe. I refuse to buy into stereotypical norms where others decide how I should feel, behave what I should do, wear and so on, based on nothing but the date on my birth certificate. I’m the same person (possibly more evolved and definitely wiser and more experienced) who entered the dance and fitness world as a teenager. I still love to dance, exercise, move and teach and I’ve added to my original loves too. I’m fascinated by how we operate as holistic beings – our mind, body, soul and gut! I’ve added decades of learning to my initial passions and am able to add more ways to assist ‘my people’ (you) with their (your) entire health, wellness and happiness. I live my beliefs of self-care, passion, purpose and balance (ok I sometimes let the passion and purpose take over a bit but I’m better at reigning back and recovering than I was). I am the best version of me given how much I dedicate time and effort to me. I’m no longer the competing GB athlete who trained 4 hours a day and 8 at the weekend, or the full time dancer, gymnast whose focus was on my fitness, skills and performance.

Today I am a full time ‘ME’ with roles as a wife, mother of 5 fur babies, auntie, daughter, sister, friend, campaigner and work as an impassioned, dedicated multidiscipline dance, health and fitness professional, I have more roles than previously. I’ve learned a great deal from all my previous life roles all of which informs my work and life today.

When looking for an excellent hairdresser go to the salon, walk up to the person with the best haircut and  …… ask them who does their hair!

Gut friendly recipe

We had this dish last night and loved it. It’s actually vegan (we used plain coconut yoghurt) high in protein and gut friendly fibre, perfect for health, waistline, energy and taste buds

Sweet Potato, Red Lentil and Coconut Curry

  • 1 red onion
  • 5 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon chilli flakes
  • 2 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground tumeric
  • 2 sweet potatoes
  • 150 Grams red lentils
  • 400 mL coconut milk
  • 500 mL vegetable stock
  • 150 Grams fresh spinach
  • 2 Tbs fresh lemon juice
  • sea salt
  • black pepper
  • cooked rice
  • natural yoghurt

plus 1 handful coriander leaves

  1. Heat the oil in a large deep pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. Add the garlic, chilli flakes, garam masala, ground coriander, cumin and turmeric. Fry for 3–4 minutes, stirring now and again, until aromatic.
  2. Add the sweet potatoes, lentils, coconut milk and stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 30–35 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent the lentils from sticking, until the sweet potatoes and lentils are cooked through.
  3. Add the spinach to the pan and cook for 5 minutes until wilted down. Stir in the lemon juice and season to taste with up to a teaspoon of salt and a grinding of black pepper.
  4. Serve with rice, a dollop of yoghurt and coriander leaves scattered over.

Tip: This is vegan, apart from the yoghurt that is served with it; you can use a dairy-free alternative to yoghurt, if you prefer

Have a fab week, looking forward to getting sweaty with you!

Love ya,

Helen x
